Fearful Symmetry

Playa del Rey photographer

The Tyger
by William Blake

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Check out the new edition of Colored Chalk, which features my photos on the front and back covers and was edited by none other than the magnificent Michael Paul Gonzalez. This issue's theme is the Ten Commandments and there is one story for each. If you have a chance, read it online or download a free copy!

My Fair Photo

Pomona, California
One of my photos was featured at the LA County Fair! This year's theme was "Recycled: Fashion, Food and Lifestyle in Advertising Photography." I chose this photo of a bride going up the stairs of a train station to show how public transportation can be used even for special occasions.

MY Day in the Life

From Playa del Rey through Los Angeles and Hollywood to San Diego
A messageboard I frequent recently had this photo assignment for last Friday:

Document one typical day of your life in photos

I'm not sure what to count as the start of my day. I tend to stay up late working on photos and catching up on emails. I love the night. This is the time I am most productive. This day is no exception. It's after 2 am according to my Mac and I'm finishing up the final touches on some photos.

I am not a morning person. But I have a million things to do today so I drag myself out of bed.

Michael helps pack my car for my shoot this weekend.

First stop: the lab to pick up some promotional materials
How do you like this postcard?

The best equipment rental place ever. I have been going to Calumet for over a decade.

The lights

Off I go!

Along the way I see the coolest classic car.

I run a few more errands, stop by my place and change, and I'm back on the road. I love taking this street right by the beach. It's not the fastest way to go, but it's the most relaxing mile of my drive.

I'm not looking through the viewfinder since I am driving. Which is how I end up with this photo. For the record, I was trying to take a photo of a palm tree against the sky. But the blue is kinda nice, no?

The way to San Diego is rather uneventful. I'm concentrating on driving so no more car photos.

I have two boudoir sessions today. The first model E. wants some photos for her husband for Valentine's Day. I took a bunch of sexy photos and some fun silhouettes of her wearing these kick-ass boots.

The second model plans on sending photos to her fiance in Iraq. I think he'll get a kick out of the shots! C. was a lot of fun and gorgeous. I took a few hundred photos so she'll have lots to choose from!

I'm tired. And hungry. My friend Kim picks me up and we go try a new restaurant.

It's restaurant week in San Diego so we get to pick a three-course meal from a prix fixe menu. My favorite is the passion fruit creme brulee dessert. The food is good but the company is excellent!

Kim drops me off at the hotel. The city sleeps as I organize my gear for tomorrow's shoots.

The moon keeps me company.

Finally I am done and go to bed!

Cover Art

My photo graces the cover of the January edition of webzine Colored Chalk. This issue's theme is Sins of the Father examining "fatherhood through the lens of sin: alcohol, drugs, murder, anger, violence, indifference, and love." You should check it out and read some stories!

Wear White After Labor Day

Los Angeles, California
Just because it's Labor Day doesn't mean it's time to put your white clothes away. In fact, we dare you to take out your wedding gown and wear it again.

Polka Photos would like to offer 3 adventurous brides a complimentary portrait session.

Want to play in the ocean? Ride your Harley? Go hiking? Skydive? Not sure what you want? We can come up with some fun locations.

To qualify:
1. You must like having fun.
2. You must wear a wedding gown. If you don't want to get your expensive gown dirty, we can recommend places to buy inexpensive gowns.
3. You must come to the LA area for the session. But if you insist on flying us out to Hawaii then we won't refuse.

So go ahead, defy a cardinal fashion rule. And get the photos to prove it. We dare you!

Email us.

Polka Photos Wins Accolade of Excellence!

Santa Monica, California
I decided to enter some prints in the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) 8 X 10 Competition. This was my first time entering and I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

Today I received an email that one of my prints won the Accolade of Excellence!

From the accompanying press release:

"Aleks Bienkowska of Playa Del Rey, CA, has received special honors in the WEDDING & PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHERS INTERNATIONAL (WPPI) 2008 WPPI 8 x 10 1st Half Print Competition. Designed to recognize outstanding photographers, the judging was held in Santa Monica, CA on June, 2008.

"Sea of Love" received an Accolade of Excellence in the Engagement category.

Bienkowska competed against an international field of photographers to win such honors.

The 2008 competition included 932 prints in 18 different categories submitted by photographers from all over the world. "

And here's the winning photo of Selina and Steve:

Life's a beach!

Playa del Rey, California
Polka Photos has moved to a new place right by the ocean! We're still designing the client area and unpacking our office so no inside photos yet. But the spot is perfect for engagement and newlywed shoots - there's the beach, park, lagoon, playground and cool murals all within walking distance. And there's plenty of parking in the lot across the street from our studio. We can't wait to have you come over!

What do Budget, Boxes and Beach have in common?

Playa del Rey, California
I'm still waiting for a correct guess....

Kim, a June bride-to-be, wrote "My guess is a new website and/or blog." Actually, a modestly updated site is in the works but that's not the big news.

Any other guesses? You have all the clues you need. Last chance!

One of my wedding photos is on the Wedding Photography Project website! I entered a photo from Katie & Jon's wedding in the "Cool Photo" Contest. It didn't win, but I feel honored to be among these great photographers. If you have a chance, check out the inspiring photos on here and read about how the photographers made the pictures. Thanks Cory Parris for the awesome website and for publishing my photo!
